Camera Broke / New Camera...

Yep, my camera went and died on me!
I put the battery back in after charging, switched on, the lens started to come out and then stopped and started making wrenching noises, it stopped after a while and bought up a thing that said E18. After a few tries, I managed to get it to switch back on normally, only now the focus at depth is completely screwed-up, I can focus up to about 15cm, but after that the imaged is really fuzzy and blurred...Went into the camera shop and asked them, and they said they couldn't do anything about it and probably one of the elements had slipped out of allignment.
Friday, I rushed into Exeter and went to Jessops to get a replacement.
I don't get paid till friday next, so had to get it on store credit (which is a problem in itself for a lowly student) anyway, after lots of sitting around waiting to see if they'd approve my credit, they finally did! The store guy thought it was on account of them thinking I wouldn't be able to pay them back, anyhoo, I now have £399.99 to pay back by 2006 (Though I'll actually be paying it back over the next two months, thanks alot 'Interest Free Credit')
So now I've got my lovely new matte-black Canon Powershot S70...mmmm 7mpx... mmmmm... 28mm wideangle... doh... 32mb mem card (I'll be ebaying for a 1gb when I get paid!)

Yay!

Buzznet is finally unfiltered on college computers...
No more 30 mins maximum at the library every day...
No more time limits...

Nearly, but not quite...
'Jerry

However, in the event that this results in complaints or inappropriate use, the decision may be reviewed.' (- Meaning Buzznet)
I thought, 'Great, I can finally use buzznet at college', but when I try and use it, I can log-in and access the main site, but if I try to go to any page that is http://something.buzznet.com, it is still filtered... Grrrrr... Close, but not close enough!

Movies...

Really moving and actually guite funny piece about a man whoes conuntry experiences a political coup while he is in the air and so when he lands, he discovers that he cannot enter the USA or return home, and so is forced to stay in the terminal. I originally thought that the film would be based on the story of Merhan Karimi Nasseri who was trapped at Charles de Gaulle airport, France, since 1988, but curiosly enough, no credit was given for the origin of the story, which I find perplexing given that the political aspects of the entrapment in the movie almost exactly mirror those of the true story. Here is a very small extract from an article writen about Merhan:
"After seven years of circulating between Brussels and Paris, he tried to fly to London, but was turned back by immigration officers. French police arrested him, but because he had no official documents, there was no country to which he could be deported. He has been at the Paris airport ever since."
In contrast (well, not exactly contrast, maybe just juxtaposition), the character of Viktor (played by Tom Hanks, in The Terminal) comes from a fictional country in Eastern Europe whoes homeland erupts in a firey coup while he is over international waters. His passport is invalid, his papers void and therefore is simply (as put by US Homeland Security) "unacceptable". Despite of his predicement, be makes the most of his time, enriching the lives of the people around him. Eventually, when his country is re-formed he is given a one day emergency visa to enter the US in order to fufill a promise to his dead father. However, the head of imigrations at the airport tells him that if me leaves the airport instead of returning home, he will "arange" for his new friends to loose their jobs, and in one case, be deported to serve a jail sentance.
Prepared to return home, however begrudgingly, his new friends show him that he must fight the system and so give him the courage to leave the airport and fulfill his promise.

Console Bonanza...
Here's the breakdown:
My Bike: So, its been sitting in the yard for yonks, and now I'm finally getting rid of it. I would pay to have it taken away (well, not really, but you know what I mean) and so I'm getting something for nothing really. Anyhoo, I'm swapping the bike for a Sega Dreamcast. A bit of an old games console, but not so old that its crap or anything, its almost as good as a PS2, which allows me to link nicely to the next item.
My Handheld: Okay, so I get bored quickly, I know that I only got it like a month ago, but its already boring. So, I'm swapping that too. And I'm getting (as you may have guessed from the link) a Playstation 2!! Now I can finally play Eye Toy!!!

Look like I've got a lot of gaming ahead of me!

Evolution...
Here is an advanced preview of my latest article "Darwin in a Download". I've submitted it to the Exeter Flying Post in the hopes that it will get into the March issue of the publication. Enjoy, and any comments appreciated!
Darwin in a Download
by J H Cooke
Social interaction specialists have often speculated that college life may emulate the Darwinian model of evolution. Indeed, at Exeter College, this certainly appears to be the case. The following extract clearly represents the interactions within the food chain in the Presentation Resources department…
A soft wiring sound erupts across the relative quiet of the room. Breaking the tentative cease-fire of electronic noises. A barrage of raucous laughter breaks out from a hidden corner, the result of some minor, insignificant misbehaviour. An expression of unintelligent delight at a trifling act of juvenile defiance. Fight the system, change the world and screw the bastard establishment. The battle cry of the lesser-spotted Juvinus Malicious, a small, snivelling creature, its only source of happiness coming from its attempts to gain relief from the futile carousel of repetitive actions.
I crouch lower behind my screen.
“Don’t look at me, don’t look at me”, I mutter the constant mantra of Homus Insignificas,
“I’m not here, I don’t exist…” Yeah, right “…honest”
I glance fitfully to my right.
“Wha’choo lookin’ aht?”
Fear grips my cold heart. A fully developed, bull Jerkus Populus advances towards me, jowls foaming in rage. I turn away, blind to my own fate.
So, are students really the next evolutionary generation, or just a sub-sect of the genus? Only time will tell.

Parkour...

http://www.urbanfreeflow.co.uk
I've finally started to put some effort into doing something that I've been interested in for a long time. Many of you may have seen the two hugely popular shows on Le Parkour (or Free Running as it is also known), Jump London and Jump Britan, the former being shown last year and the latter, just last week.
Parkour is all about moving efficiently through urban enviroments in ways that aren't commonly explored. You can find out more about Parkour at Urban Freeflow, here: http://www.urbanfreeflow.co.uk/
Anyhoo, I've started training now, moving from skating style exercise to running and upper-body strengthening. I'm hoping to meet with a local Parkour group soon to pickup some tips.

First post...
This is the first post on my new blog.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Jerry Cooke and I live in the South West of England. I'm currently 18 years old, and am studying at Exeter College. I'm a keen writer (am planning to study Journalism at Uni) and am currently Deputy Editor of the ECSU Magazine, Double Zero. I am an experienced skater, I've been skating since I was 5 1/2 and am currently ranked 4th Male Style Slalomer in the UK (after competing at the UK Style Slalom Championships in Eastbourne last July).
I've got a girlfriend called Ellie, who is one of the main driving forces in my life, and who is at Uni in Lancashire.
Okay, I think thats all the grounding required, I hope you enjoy reading this blog, I'll try and post as often as I can.
Jerry
